Social Networking sites provide platforms for building online communities. The Web 2.0 phenomenon has seen another dotcom boom, and a general revival in the web industry, with many social networking sites selling for massive amounts. Social networking sites are people-oriented sites, which, by their nature, allow users more control over their online environment. 2007 saw a massive increase in the popularity of social networking sites, with Facebook, gaining a massive userbase after launching their API, allowing anyone to build and develop add-on components for the website.
Friendster, mySpace, Flickr, LinkedIn and Facebook are some of the most successful 2.0 sites. The boom of blogging on the web, thanks to Open Source blogs such as Weblog and Wordpress have enabled many sites to allow user commenting on information and articles.
